Helping out HBCUs…A Student’s Perspective

How can you help an HBCU or an educational institution?

Most of us receive pamphlet and flyers in the mail or an impersonal random e-mail sent to hundreds, if not thousands of other students or graduates. All with the same subject line GIMME GIMME GIMME.

Well I think I can speak for most of us…I gave 4 years of my life to advance my educational skills, working in the library for chump change while on work study. I ran on your tracks, played on your fields, danced on your floors and screamed at your games, to finally graduate college with huge ‘mortgage sized’ loans; starting at a baseline pay of $32,000 (if you are lucky) and people still turn around and ask me for Money! Get out of here!!!

I have to admit the first few years out of school (especially for those between the age of 22 and 34) have been painful. Not to give a historical economic lesson… we all know what happened, multiple wars, economic crash, bailout, crazy political parties (and I am not talking about the Italian bunga bunga parties) have left an educated generation working at gas stations and home improvement retail stores. Now things are finally getting better (hopefully) and we can finally take a grasp on our lives, maybe this time we can qualify for a loan to buy a Honda Accord sedan, so the kids can sit comfortably in their car seats. We can maybe afford that nice dinner with our significant other, at that one restaurant. Upgrade the speed of our broadband internet, so we can order both HULU and Netflix! And finally afford a new mattress.

So I think the last thing on peoples mind is: “Hey let me make this financial donation to my school.” But something we must all realize is that many schools rely on these donations, to reduce tuition cost, keep up with technology, build new labs, upgrade dorm rooms, buy new books or repair old one, get supplies for the different departments, ensure proper sanitation and finally make sure that the students attending the school have as much access to the best education as possible. So as sad as this may sound, trust me, your school appreciates every donation, that it’s $5 or $15 every cent helps! You can start by checking out Star Bright Donation’s ’Non Profit for HBCUs‘ page. Thanks for hearing me.
